Common questions about the CIPT exam

How close are these questions to the CIPT exam?

Close in difficulty: they are written at the level of the CIPT exam and to its official topics, so you are not practising on questions easier or harder than the ones you will sit. They are not questions taken from the exam, and each one comes with an explanation.

How many CIPT practice questions are free?

30 of the 322. The first 5 need no signup; a free account unlocks the rest.

How many questions are on the CIPT exam, and how long is it?

90 questions in 150 minutes of testing time: 75 scored and 15 unscored. Some are scenario-based, and some are multi-select with no partial credit. With the optional 15-minute break midway, plan for about 165 minutes in the seat.

What is the CIPT passing score?

300, on a scale of 100 to 500. IAPP converts your raw score to that scale and states that 300 does not represent 60%. There is no minimum score per topic.

How much does the CIPT exam cost?

$550, the same for IAPP members and non-members. A retake costs $375, as does a first attempt if you already hold another IAPP certification.

Are there any prerequisites for the CIPT?

IAPP publishes no education, experience or prior-certification requirement for the CIPT. You buy the exam and sign the Candidate Application Statement.

How many questions come from each CIPT topic?

IAPP publishes a range per topic, not a percentage. Under Body of Knowledge v4.0.0, effective 1 September 2025: the privacy technologist's role in the organization 15–19 questions, data collection, use, dissemination and destruction 19–23, privacy risk management 17–21, privacy by design 7–9, and privacy engineering and privacy governance 9–11. See the CIPT study guide.

Where do I take the CIPT, and in what language?

At a Pearson VUE test centre or online through Pearson VUE OnVUE, in English only. You buy the exam from the IAPP store and must sit it within one year of buying it. A retake can be no sooner than 7 days after your last attempt.

How long does the CIPT certification last?

Two years. To renew, you log 20 CPE hours per two-year term and either pay the maintenance fee or hold an active IAPP membership.
