Common questions about the CIPP/US exam

How close are these questions to the CIPP/US exam?

Close in difficulty: they are written at the level of the CIPP/US exam and to its official topics, so you are not practising on questions easier or harder than the ones you will sit. They are not questions taken from the exam, and each one comes with an explanation.

How many CIPP/US practice questions are free?

30 of the 252. The first 5 need no signup; a free account unlocks the rest.

How many questions are on the CIPP/US exam, and how long is it?

90 questions in 150 minutes of testing time: 75 scored and 15 unscored. Some are scenario-based, and some are multi-select with no partial credit. An optional 15-minute break splits the exam into two halves, and you cannot go back once the first half is submitted.

What is the CIPP/US passing score?

300, on a scale of 100 to 500. IAPP converts your number of correct answers to that scale and states that 300 does not represent 60%.

How much does the CIPP/US exam cost?

$550 for a first attempt, the same for IAPP members and non-members. A retake costs $375, as does a first attempt if you already hold another IAPP certification.

Are there any prerequisites for the CIPP/US?

IAPP publishes no education, experience or prior-certification requirement for the CIPP/US, and the process starts with buying the exam. After you pass, the credential activates once you pay the maintenance fee or hold IAPP membership.

How many questions come from each CIPP/US topic?

IAPP publishes a range per topic, not a percentage. Under Body of Knowledge v2.6.1, effective 1 September 2025: the U.S. privacy environment 27–33 questions, federal privacy laws 15–19, government and court access to private-sector information 3–5, workplace privacy 4–6, and state privacy laws 17–21. See the CIPP/US study guide.

Where do I take the CIPP/US, and in what language?

At a Pearson VUE test centre or online through Pearson VUE OnVUE, in English only. You buy the exam from the IAPP store and must sit it within one year of buying it. A retake can be no sooner than 7 days after your last attempt.

How long does the CIPP/US certification last?

It has no fixed expiry date. You keep it active by logging 20 CPE hours per two-year term and paying the $250 maintenance fee or holding an IAPP membership.
