CIPM Study Guide: How to Pass the IAPP Exam

If you're sitting for the IAPP CIPM, here's what you're walking into: 90 multiple-choice questions, 150 minutes, and a passing score of 300 on IAPP's 100 to 500 scale. The exam costs $550. You sit it at a Pearson VUE center, or remotely through OnVue.

What's on the CIPM exam

The CIPM is built around the IAPP Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint, version 4.2.0, effective September 1, 2025. It splits into six domains:

Only 75 of those 90 questions count. The other 15 are trial questions IAPP is testing for future exams, and nothing marks them out, so answer all 90 as if they score. That's why the ranges above don't add up to 90.

Domains I and II cover the strategic half of the job: writing a privacy framework, getting executive buy-in, structuring governance, and building the team and policies.

Domains III through VI are the operational life cycle, the day-to-day work of running a privacy program.

• Assessing Data (III). What personal data you hold and where it flows: inventories, mapping, assessments.
• Protecting Personal Data (IV). The controls, and privacy-by-design thinking.
• Sustaining Program Performance (V). Metrics, audits, keeping the program alive. The smallest domain.
• Responding to Requests and Incidents (VI). Data subject requests and breach response, usually as scenarios.

The exam tests judgment with these scenarios. It asks what a privacy manager should do in a situation, so memorizing the text of a regulation is not enough.

How hard the CIPM is and how long to prepare

Difficulty depends almost entirely on your background.

If you already work in privacy, compliance, risk, or audit, this is mostly about mapping what you do to the IAPP's vocabulary and framework. Plan on three to five weeks of focused evening study. The trap for experienced people is assuming their company's way of doing things is the "right" answer. The exam wants the IAPP framework's answer.

If you're coming in cold, with no privacy program experience, give yourself six to eight weeks. The vocabulary alone takes a while to sink in, and the operational life cycle won't mean much until you've seen how the pieces connect.

Is the CIPM worth it

The IAPP's 2025-26 Salary and Jobs Report cited a 30% year-over-year increase in demand for privacy professionals in 2024, and found that 68% of them had taken on AI governance responsibilities by 2025. Pay estimates are all over the place. PayScale and SimplyHired put the US Privacy Manager average somewhere between $85,100 and $113,598, depending on which source and year you take.

How to study for the CIPM

Read the blueprint first. The official IAPP CIPM Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint, plus the free study guides on IAPP's certification site.

Then watch for the habits that cost points.

• Don't memorize laws. The CIPM is not the CIPP, and legal backgrounds over-study regulations and under-study operations.
• Think like a manager, not an individual contributor. The sustainable, documented answer usually beats the fastest technical fix.
• Learn the life cycle in order. Many questions turn on which phase owns an activity, so practice reciting Assess, Protect, Sustain, Respond and what each one is responsible for.

Switch to questions early. Don't wait until you feel ready. You want to be answering scenarios while there's still time to go back and fix whatever the misses expose.

Review every miss. Work out why the right answer is right, not just that it was.

Finish with a mock exam. Full length, timed. You get 150 minutes for 90 questions. Do a few before the real thing.
