# AIGP Study Guide: How to Pass the IAPP AI Governance Exam

If you're sitting for the IAPP AIGP, here's what you're walking into: 100 multiple-choice questions, 165 minutes, and a passing score of 300 on IAPP's 100 to 500 scale. The exam costs $799, or $649 if you're an IAPP member. You sit it at a Pearson VUE center, or remotely through OnVUE.

## How much does the AIGP cost?

The exam is $799, or $649 for IAPP members, but keeping the credential and retakes add to that:

| What | Price |
|---|---|
| AIGP exam, non-member | $799 |
| AIGP exam, IAPP member | $649 |
| Retake, non-member | $625 |
| Certification maintenance fee | $250 per two-year term |
| IAPP membership (covers the maintenance fee) | $295 a year |
| IAPP's official practice exam (PDF, 100 questions) | $60, or $50 for members |

## What's in the AIGP Body of Knowledge

The AIGP Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint (the "BoK") is IAPP's official outline of what the exam covers. It's a free PDF on the [AIGP certification page](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp). The current version is 2.1. It was approved in September 2025, took effect on February 2, 2026, and replaced version 2.0.1. Anything older describes an exam that no longer exists.

The BoK breaks the exam into four domains and 13 competencies, and gives a question range for each. Here are the domains:

| Domain | Questions |
|---|---|
| I. Understanding the foundations of AI governance | 16 to 20 |
| II. Understanding how laws, standards and frameworks apply to AI | 19 to 23 |
| III. Understanding how to govern AI development | 21 to 25 |
| IV. Understanding how to govern AI deployment and use | 21 to 25 |

IAPP publishes ranges rather than percentages, and the ranges don't add up to exactly 100. Treat them as a guide to where the weight sits.

Domains I and II are the knowledge half: what AI is, why it needs governing, and which laws and standards apply.

- **Foundations (I).** Types of AI, the risks and harms it creates, the responsible AI principles, and who does what. The blueprint separates developers, providers, deployers and users, and expects you to know how their responsibilities differ.
- **Laws, standards and frameworks (II).** How existing privacy law applies to AI (lawful basis, impact assessments, automated decision-making), plus IP, nondiscrimination, consumer protection and product liability. Then the AI-specific laws: the EU AI Act's risk tiers, the rules for general-purpose models, and the penalties. The blueprint also names the South Korean AI Basic Law and US federal and state AI laws. Standards get their own competency: OECD principles, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, and ISO 22989, 42001 and 42005.

Domains III and IV are the operational half, and between them they carry the most questions.

- **Governing development (III).** Use case definition, impact assessments, model selection, data lineage and provenance, training and testing for bias and interpretability, model cards, red teaming, incident handling, and the public disclosures a provider owes.
- **Governing deployment and use (IV).** The decision to deploy: classic versus generative models, proprietary versus open source, cloud versus on-premise versus edge, and whether to use a model as-is or with fine-tuning, retrieval augmented generation or agentic architectures. Then vendor contracts, monitoring, and how to switch a system off.

The exam tests judgment with scenarios. It asks what a governance professional should do at a given stage of the life cycle. Knowing the vocabulary is not enough.

## How hard the AIGP is and how long to prepare

Difficulty depends on which half of the exam is foreign to you.

If you already hold a CIPP or CIPM, or work in privacy or compliance, Domain II is home ground. The learning curve is III and IV. You need to understand the machine learning life cycle well enough to govern it: what a model card is, what drift looks like, why red teaming happens before release. Plan on four to six weeks of evening study. That's the harder direction.

If you come from the engineering side, it's the reverse. The life cycle is familiar and the law is where the points go. Learn the EU AI Act risk tiers and who counts as a provider versus a deployer, because the exam keeps asking.

If you're coming in cold, give yourself eight weeks or more. The exam is 100 questions in 165 minutes, which works out to a little over a minute and a half per question, and some questions are multi-select with no partial credit.

## Is the AIGP worth it? Jobs and salary

The AIGP fits roles like AI governance manager, AI compliance manager, AI risk analyst, AI auditor, AI policy analyst and privacy and AI compliance program manager. Many of these jobs didn't exist under these names a few years ago, and many still sit inside a privacy or compliance team.

The [IAPP's 2025-26 Salary and Jobs Report](https://iapp.org/news/a/when-ai-governance-lands-on-privacy-s-desk) found that 68% of privacy professionals had taken on AI governance responsibilities by 2025. LinkedIn showed 20,000+ US job postings for "AI Governance" in June 2026, and 1,000+ for AI Governance Manager specifically.

Nobody publishes a salary for AIGP holders specifically, so any "AIGP salary" figure you see is an estimate for a job title. Pay estimates for those titles are all over the place. For a US Governance Manager, [Indeed](https://www.indeed.com/career/governance-manager/salaries) puts the average at $124,469 and [PayScale](https://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Governance_Manager/Salary) at $146,939. For a Compliance Manager, [Indeed](https://www.indeed.com/career/compliance-manager/salaries) says $102,055 and [PayScale](https://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Compliance_Manager/Salary) says $92,999. All 2026 figures.

Against that, the cost: $799 for the exam, then a $250 maintenance fee per two-year term (or IAPP membership at $295 a year) and 20 CPE hours per term to keep it. If you're weighing it against vendor AI certifications, [we compared them](https://certmadeeasy.com/blog/are-ai-certifications-worth-it/).

## How to study for the AIGP

**Read the blueprint first.** The official AIGP Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint, version 2.1, plus the free study guide IAPP sends on request. Check the version on the cover. If it says it supersedes 2.0.1, you have the right one.

**Then watch for the habits that cost points.**

- Learn the roles. Developer, provider, deployer and user in the foundations domain, then provider, deployer, importer and distributor under the AI-specific laws. A lot of questions turn on who is responsible for what.
- Don't study it like a privacy exam. Privacy law is one competency worth 4 to 6 questions. Most of the exam is life cycle governance.
- Learn the life cycle in order: use case, impact assessment, design and build, data, training and testing, release, monitoring, incidents, deactivation. Questions ask which stage owns an activity.
- Know the frameworks by name. NIST AI RMF, ISO 42001, OECD principles, the EU AI Act tiers. The wrong options are usually frameworks that exist but don't fit the question.

**Switch to questions early.** Don't wait until you feel ready. You want to be answering scenarios while there's still time to go back and fix whatever the misses expose.

**Review every miss.** Work out why the right answer is right, not just that it was. On multi-select questions the stem tells you exactly how many to pick, and there is no partial credit, so a right answer plus a wrong one scores zero.

**Finish with a mock exam.** Full length, timed. 100 questions in 165 minutes. Do a few before the real thing. Our [AIGP practice exam guide](https://certmadeeasy.com/blog/aigp-practice-exam/) covers how to tell when you're ready to book.

You can [practice with realistic AIGP exam-style questions](https://certmadeeasy.com/catalog/set-iapp-aigp) on Cert Made Easy. Hand written exam-style questions that match the domains.

We have mock exams as well.

## FAQ

### Are there prerequisites for the AIGP?

No. IAPP states there are none. Anyone can buy the exam and sit it.

### What does the AIGP cost?

$799 for non-members, $649 for IAPP members. A retake is $625 for non-members. Keeping the credential costs $250 per two-year term, or an IAPP membership at $295 a year. The [full cost breakdown](#how-much-does-the-aigp-cost) is above.

### Where do I get the AIGP Body of Knowledge?

Free from the [AIGP certification page](https://iapp.org/certify/aigp). Make sure it says version 2.1 and supersedes 2.0.1. That's the version the exam has used since February 2, 2026.

### How long is the AIGP valid?

Two years. Keeping it active takes 20 CPE hours per term plus the $250 maintenance fee, or an IAPP membership.

### What is the passing score for the AIGP?

IAPP converts raw results to a common scale that runs from 100 to 500 and sets the cut at 300 for every one of its exams. That works out to roughly 65% to 80% correct, depending on the exam form. Our mock exams target the upper bound.

### Did the AIGP exam change in 2026?

Yes. Blueprint version 2.1 took effect on February 2, 2026 with four domains, so check that anything you buy is written for it. If you're choosing between IAPP exams, the [CIPM](https://certmadeeasy.com/blog/cipm-study-guide/) covers running a privacy program and the [CIPT](https://certmadeeasy.com/blog/cipt-study-guide/) covers building privacy into systems.
